Sony WH-1000XM6 Hands-on Review: The Ultimate ANC Headphones for Both Home & Travel
Should You Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6?
Sony’s flagship noise-canceling headphones, the WH-1000XM6, have finally been unveiled. Whenever a new product drops, the eternal dilemma begins: “Should I buy the new model, or go for the discounted predecessor?”
Since the performance of the previous model (WH-1000XM5) was already proven, the decision might be even harder. However, with the WH-1000XM6, I definitely felt three major changes.
- The Return of the Foldable Design: Much easier to fit in your bag.
- Wider Headband: Improved the comfort issues of the previous model.
- New Processor (First in 7 Years): ANC performance has become significantly smoother.

If you want to compare based specifically on sound quality, it would be good to also refer to my recent review of the DUNU KOTO ITO earphones. They offer a different direction of resolution and spatial sense compared to headphones, making your selection criteria much clearer.
WH-1000XM6 vs. XM5 Design Comparison

The most disappointing aspect while using the XM5 was its non-foldable structure. The XM6 is a fully foldable type.

Category | WH-1000XM5 (Previous) | WH-1000XM6 (New) |
|---|---|---|
Portability | Non-foldable | Foldable (Returned) |
Comfort | Thin headband | Wider & Thinner headband |
Case | Zipper type | Magnetic type |
Design | Symmetrical | Asymmetrical (Easy L/R distinction) |
The case has also changed from a zipper to a magnetic mechanism, making it much easier to open and close. For those who frequently move between cafes, libraries, or business trips, this difference alone will be satisfying.

“This is Real Noise Cancellation”
Because I always suffer from environmental noise around my house, ANC performance was the most important factor for me. To give you the conclusion right away: XM6’s ANC is quieter and cleaner.
The resonance/pressure that was slightly annoying in the XM5 is almost gone. Simply put, it feels like ambient noise has been reduced further, but the actual user experience is very satisfying.

Long-term Comfort Test
When using the XM5 for a long time, I felt pressure on the top of my head which was a bit painful. However, thanks to the wider headband of the XM6, it was a huge help during long work sessions.
Experiencing ‘Cinema Mode’
One of the reasons many people praised the XM6 is this ‘Cinema Mode.’ You can turn it on directly in the app, and the soundstage changes completely. If you enjoy movies or live content, I highly recommend trying it.
If you get a chance to visit a store for a demo, make sure to listen to it.

Who is the Sony WH-1000XM6 for?
- Long-distance commuters & Cafe workers: Perfect foldable portability, powerful ANC.
- Freelancers working alone for long hours: Wider headband, convenient voice control.
- Content consumers: Upgraded ‘Cinema Mode’ sound.
What if you only use it at home?
Conversely, if you mainly use it at home and portability isn’t a huge factor, the discounted XM5 is still a great choice.
